Always somehow poignant, it’s the opera that won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and a New York Critics Circle Citation on first curtain down. The Arthur Miller play on which it is based was written as an allegory for McCarthyism and the 1950’s Red Scare in the USA, even though the action takes place during the 1692 Salem witch trials. Robert Ward’s expressive score encompasses the breadth and history of American music. There are echoes of Copeland, hymn tunes and shades of the blues, all combining to evoke the strength and dignity of good people standing up to the madness and hysteria sweeping Salem.
