Graffiti is a hot topic in Perth. From street artists selling their works at top-end galleries, through to large State resource spend on hardline policy, it’s a divisive issue with a wide array of community opinions related to it.
Earlier in 2008, with support from the Australian Network for Art & Technology and the Adelaide Festival, one half of world-infamous GRL (Graffiti Research Laboratory) James Powderly visited ARTRAGE for a presentation about some of these issues, and a staging of the ‘laser tag’ system onto the Telstra building. GRL are world-famous for developing new creative technology and tools that support freedom of expression, and they distribute their material for free.
Most recently, Powderly was flown to Shanghai to be part of the Olympics Cultural Program, then imprisoned after ‘laser tagging’ FREE TIBET onto a building.
Local artist Jerrem Lynch took part in a master-class with Powderly in 2008 and has been putting his teachings to work staging public events using his own spin on the laser tag system:
“I organise Electronic Street Art nights, using various input methods that allow the general public to decorate buildings, cars and other street furniture. This is a form of non-destructive graffiti as everything disappears once the projector is turned off. It’s also lots of fun as everyone can get a kick out of painting these huge surfaces.”
All are welcome to join in and take part.
